Morning,
We are consistently tracking our school’s chronic absenteeism and, as the end of the year approaches (10 weeks away, excluding Spring Break), there is naturally an increase in student absences.
We realize that students miss school for many reasons, but the State of Nevada has determined that a student is chronically absent when he or she is absent for more than 10% (18 days) in a school year – regardless of the reason for the absence.
As a school, we are measured by our ability to keep our total percentage of students who are chronically absent at less than 10%. Pre Covid & 2021, Mannion’s Chronic Absenteeism rate remained traditionally below 10%, but since 2021, the rate has increased to well above 10%. In 2022 it was 23%, in 2023 it was 22%, and currently, in 2024, it is at 17% (with 10 weeks left in the school year). This increase in chronic absenteeism is a national pattern, but in 2023, our rate of chronic absenteeism was higher than other CCSD schools with similar test scores and demographics. Please take a moment to review your student’s attendance for the 23-24 school year. Utilize our “Fast Facts About Chronic Absenteeism” to count your student absences for the 23-24 school year. If your student has more than 13 absences (10% of 135 school days this year), your student is now considered part of the 17% who are deemed chronically absent. Remember, not all absences count toward chronic absenteeism, so please be sure to compare the “codes” for your student’s absences with the “Chronic Absenteeism” Guide.
We will continue to discuss chronic absenteeism at our monthly Parent Community Partnership Meeting. Our next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, March 7, at 5:30 PM in the Mannion Library.
Thank you for your support and taking a few minutes to review your student’s attendance as it relates to chronic absenteeism for the 2023-2024 school year.
Go Mustangs!
