Dear Families:
Mannion Middle School’s annual Halloween Dance will be held on Tuesday, October 31st. Students are allowed to wear a costume to school on this day only. Given this allowance, we would like to make families aware of the expectations for costumes and behavior. If your child plans on dressing up on October 31, please take a moment to discuss the expectations with him/her. Please understand that we want the children to have fun, but it is still a school day and we want to ensure that quality instruction is still able to take place.
- Absolutely NO simulated weapons of any kind. No pretend swords, guns, grenades, knives, etc. Nothing that could possibly be perceived as a weapon or simulated weapon is allowed.
- Costumes must comply with CCSD and Mannion dress code. No short shorts or skirts, revealing tops, etc. Please use good judgment.
- No gang related attire allowed. Dressing up like a “gangster” will not be allowed.
- Hats that are part of a costume are allowed. However, just wearing a ball cap and/or sunglasses and saying you are a baseball player is not a costume. If a student wants to wear a baseball uniform with a ball cap, then that is considered a costume. No “hoodies” of any kind will be allowed.
- Costumes should not be so large or obtrusive that it prevents the child from sitting comfortably in his/her desk, or so obtrusive that they block the view in the classroom of those sitting behind the student.
- Student costumes need to be respectful of body images and should not emphasize negative stereotypes of any person, gender, or ethnicity. Cultural sensitivity is required.
- Students should not interfere with another person’s costume. Students spend a lot of time, thought, money, and energy in preparing their costume. We do not want their costume damaged by another student.
- No masks are allowed, including anything that covers up a student’s face or any part of their face. Additionally, faces may be painted, but in small portions (a scar, for example) and the entire face may not be covered. Hair may be sprayed a different color, but no colored hair spray is allowed on campus. These items will be confiscated and not returned if brought to school.
- NO CLOWN COSTUMES. Due to recent issues on social media, clown costumes will not be permitted on campus.
Thank you for taking the time to discuss these expectations with your children. We truly appreciate the time our Mannion families invest in their child’s education. Happy Nevada Day & Happy Halloween!
Sincerely,
Mannion Middle School Administration
