Greetings from Mannion Middle School,
Final preparations are being made for the start of the 24-25 school year. The first day of school is Monday, August 12, 2024. We are excited to welcome over 1450 students to our campus for an exciting year!
The purpose of this email is to communicate to our parents and students an update to CCSD policies regarding cell phones and student identification badges and to share how Mannion will implement these policies. In addition, Mannion has expanded the CCSD policies to include smart watches as well as a ban on non-wired headphones. While an update to all school policies are available in the 24-25 Student Handbook, we wanted to draw specific attention to policy updates that have appeared on the CCSD website as well as on local news and in the local newspaper.
Please take a few minutes to read how these CCSD policies will be implemented at Mannion Middle School.

After reviewing these documents as a family, I encourage you to establish clear expectations for family communication during the school day. Here are a few suggestions and things to consider:
- Upon your student arriving safely to campus, do you want your student to send you a quick text to let you know they arrived at school safely? If so, these texts should be sent prior to students entering the academic hallways at 7:52 AM. If the student does not send you the text message, have consequences at home to help them remember the following day.
- Agree, as a family, not to text during instructional time. Agree that communication regarding after school pick up, activities, and/or practices be limited to during the student lunch period. The lunch schedule is available here.
- Students may use their cell phone in the Quad, but only between classes. Remind your student that this should be used only in the event of an emergency and only during passing periods. We encourage students to use their brief passing period socializing with peers as they make their way to their next class
- At 2:11 PM, the academic school day is over. Students have 7 minutes to catch the school bus and make their way to the bike rack or crosswalk. Agree that this is the time to read messages that may impact dismissal or include a last minute change of plans. If appropriate, require your student to let parents know they are leaving Mannion and making their way home.
- Finally, if your student does not have a cell phone, all students may use a school phone to contact his or her parents.
As educators, we see the impact that cell phones, smart watches, and wireless headphones play in the lives of middle school students. We believe that our plan for the implementation of CCSD policies is reasonable and balances the need for these devices with the need for a school environment that places an emphasis on learning.
The Mannion Middle School website remains your best resource for updated information. Everything you need can be found on the website, and if something is not there, we are quick to make the addition or the adjustment.
In addition, the first Parent Community Partnership Meeting of the 24-25 school year will take place on Thursday, August 15, at 5:30 PM in the Mannion Library. Mannion’s implementation of these policies will appear on the agenda.
Please do not hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions regarding Mannion Middle School.
Go Mustangs!
