Greetings,
I value communication so I wanted to update all teachers and parents with facts regarding today’s walkout.
1. At 9:35 AM an announcement was made to start the letter writing campaign. During this time some students made the decision to leave campus. Administrators, to the best our ability, supervised these students while they ran around the outside of the school similar to an activity seen during recess.
2. At 9:55 AM, the bell rang to end 2nd period. Approximately 185 students exited the campus. Students gathered at the flagpole. Three administrators remained with the group of students, sacrificing supervision of students inside the building. During this time students climbed in and out of the planters, jumped on and off the block wall, played tag, and danced to the chant, “What do we want? Gun Control. When do we want it? Now.” Students were on their phones, taking selfies, and making videos. You may see these videos on students’ social media, Instagram, and Snapchat accounts. A community member was seen filming the events, and was told not to do so.
3. At 10:17 AM, students returned inside the building. Many continued to run, dance, and chant as they walked through the 700 and 800 hallway until they eventually returned to 3rd period.
No students were prevented from leaving the building and no students were disciplined for participating in the walkout. Students that climbed on block walls and into the planter, for safety reasons, were reprimanded.
