Greetings,
I hope this update finds you and your family healthy and safe. While we continue to facilitate the day-to-day learning activities as well as the weekly attendance checks, we are also in the process of establishing long term plans in the event we do not return on May 1, 2020. We realize the impact that a non-return to the 2019-2020 school year will have and we assure parents and students that we will have an organized system to clean out lockers, collect textbooks, distribute yearbooks, and return musical instruments and concert attire. These details will be shared once we know the fate of the school year.
Parents and students received a message from CCSD Superintendent Dr. Jara regarding teacher grade books being reopened for Quarter 3. According to the message:
“Due to school closures aligned with COVID-19, third-quarter gradebooks for secondary students, including students in grades six through twelve, were previously reopened based on direction from the District to provide opportunities for students to make-up work and provide missing assignments. In addition to the submission of make-up work and missing assignments, secondary students are permitted to demonstrate progress and mastery of concepts and materials in the third quarter by redoing assignments and completing test corrections to ultimately assist secondary students for the third quarter.”
Mannion Middle School has adopted the following criteria to meet this expectation:
- All students will be provided the opportunity to redo any previous assignment or assessment. These opportunities are posted on the individual teacher websites. These opportunities may be in an alternative format to protect the integrity of the assignment and assessment.
- Per District guidelines, redos on assignments and assessments will not lower a student’s grade. When scoring assignments and assessments, teachers have the option to completely replace the previous grade, average the two grades together, or provide additional points to the original grade. How the new score will be calculated with the previous score will be shared on each individual teacher’s website.
- All opportunities to redo assignments and assessments must be submitted to the teacher no later than May 1, 2020. No work will be accepted late unless a documented accommodation states otherwise.
Teachers are asked to have these alternative assignments posted on their classroom website no later than Thursday, April 16, 2020. As always, the easiest and fastest way to access a teacher’s website is at mannionmiddleschool.com/staff-directory.
As always, my staff is here to assist you and answer any questions you may have.
