Greetings,
I hope everyone continues to be well and you and your family are safe.
On April 15, 2020, I communicated the most recent update on Quarter 3 grades, which were opened by CCSD for students to redo any assignment or assessment. On April 22, 2020, CCSD announced that the Quarter 3 grade will be the semester grade, and the semester grade will be the grade that will appear on the student’s transcript. While students work to improve Quarter 3 grades, teachers are able to see the Quarter 3 grade change with each completed assignment; unfortunately, due to restrictions with the grading program, parents and students are not receiving the updates via Parent Portal. This is not a Mannion issue, but a CCSD issue, and the District is working to rectify this.
Meanwhile, any assignment in Quarter 4, regardless of the grade, is being marked as “Not for Grade” and will not impact the final semester grade. We are currently in Quarter 4, so parents will see this Quarter 4 change in the parent portal. Finally, Mannion has established a school wide deadline of May 1, 2020, for all quarter 3 redo opportunities. To facilitate these opportunities, Mannion teachers posted their guidelines and expectations for Quarter 3 redo opportunities on their classroom website for parents and students to review. If your student plans to take advantage of any redo opportunities, the time to visit the teacher website and/or email the teacher is now!
This week I have been meeting with individual teachers and hearing stories about our students who are taking advantage of this Quarter 3 opportunity. I am delighted to hear of some students increasing their grades from Fs to Ds, Cs, Bs, and beyond! To those students wanting to improve their grades of Ds, Cs, and Bs – I applaud their efforts as well! I believe we, as a society, often fail to appreciate what we have until it is taken away. This past week I have seen our students find a newfound appreciation for learning. Great job, Mustangs!
While we take the next week and emphasize students improving Quarter 3 grades, we are beginning to process the information recently released at the School Board Meeting regarding the process to closeout the 2019-2020 school year. Today, I attended a principal meeting where the guidelines and expectations were further detailed and explained. Over the next few days, I will review this information with my staff and formulate our plan. As we plan, we understand the following:
- Students have items in their academic lockers that belong to the school as well as personal items. No items will be thrown away until students have an opportunity to retrieve them.
- Students with PE have items in their PE lockers that need to be retrieved.
- Students have, at home, items that belong to the school. This includes instruments, music uniforms, textbooks, library books, and computers. Students need an opportunity to return these items to the school.
- The process to retrieve items from the school and return items to the school must be organized in a way to ensure proper social distancing for staff and student safety.
Once again, I am asking parents and students to provide my staff with time to review the recent information we received from CCSD. The plan will be communicated to parents via ParentLink and posted on the website. To further explain the plan and answer questions, I plan to host the April Parent Community Partnership Meeting via Google Hangout on April 30, 2020, at 6:00 PM. A link to the Hangout will be on the school’s calendar and on the main page of our website. I will also utilize Facebook Live through the official Jack & Terry Mannion Facebook Page.
As always, I appreciate your support during this challenging time.
Go Mustangs!
