Greetings,
Mannion will celebrate Nevada Reading Week from February 22 through March 1. The theme is Find Your SuperPower – READ! The following activities are planned:
Principal’s Book Chat & Family Movie Night
THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED DUE TO WEATHER RELATED CANCELLATION OF SCHOOL.
On February 22, Mr. Petersen and students that read “Hidden Figures” will discuss the book during lunch. Bring your lunch! That evening, at 6 PM, everyone is invited to the Family Movie Night in the gym where “Hidden Figures” will be shown. Free Popcorn and water will be sold to support the Community Center.
Bookmark Contest
ELA teachers will pass out the directions for bookmarks and the library will have blank bookmarks available for decoration. Students must decorate the bookmark incorporating the theme, “Find Your Superpower-Read!” into the design and submit it to their ELA teacher by Friday, March 1st at 2:00 p.m. Winners will be selected by Mrs. Medina and a judging committee. There will be prizes for 1st, 2nd, 3rd and honorable mention. Please create your bookmark in black ink or pencil.
*7th Grade can use the reading week theme “Find Your Superpower-Read!” or “Outsiders”.
Mystery Reader
During morning announcements Tuesday and Thursday, a mystery staff member will read a short passage over the intercom. Each CLASS will vote on who they think the mystery reader is. Teachers will fill out a ballot each day and ballots need to be sent down to the library by 9:00 am (ONE guess per class). All classes with the correct answer will go into a drawing to win a prize. Winners will be announced on Tuesday, March 5th during the morning announcements.
Trivia Questions
Students will listen to Nevada Reading Week themed trivia questions Monday, Wednesday, and Friday on the daily announcements. If ANYONE (this is for individual students NOT a class) knows the answer to the trivia question, he or she must write down the answer and turn it in to their first period teacher. Students must write his or her answer on a piece of scratch paper with his or her name and grade. Mrs. Medina will draw one correct answer from each grade level each day. The winners will receive a prize. All winners will be announced on Tuesday, March 5th during the morning announcements.
Superhero Challenge
Students will receive a Superhero Challenge form to complete in class and at home. Please complete enough items to earn 150 points. You will need to complete your Superhero Challenge and turn it in by Friday, March 1. Mrs. Medina will draw one winner per grade level. The winners will receive a prize. All winners will be announced on Tuesday, March 5th during the morning announcements.
Drop Everything And Read
ELA classes will have DEAR time Monday-Friday during the last 15 minutes of each block for 6th and 7th grade classes and the end of each period for 8th grade English. Bring a book!
