Greetings,
October 14, 2024, is the start of the second quarter. Students have been enrolled for 45 days, and for those of you who are counting, there are only 135 days until summer!
Over the next 45 days (Quarter 2), we ask all families to carefully monitor student attendance. In the event the student is out, and sees a doctor, please ask the doctor’s office for a medical note. Doctor provided notes are entered into the student information system (Infinite Campus) as MDP (Medical Professional) and does not count against Chronic Absenteeism. In addition, students who are pulled out of school after 4th period have met the required seat time for the day. Scheduling necessary appointments at optimal times will limit chronic absenteeism.
The start of the second quarter, October 14, 2024, is a great time to review student absences. As a reminder, the Nevada School Performance Framework (NSPF), scores schools based on student attendance. In 2023, Mannion had a Chronic Absenteeism Rate of 22.4%. In 2024, we lowered it to 16.8%. In 2025, our goal is to lower it to less than 10%. As of October 14, Chronic Absenteeism for Mannion students is at 14.8%.
Any student who is absent more than 10% of the total number of school days is considered chronically absent by the State of Nevada. In other words, in the first 45 days of school, any student who is absent more that 4 times is considered chronically absent (10% of 45 is 4). Fortunately, with 135 days left in the school year, a chronically absent student today is able to NOT be chronically absent by the end of the school year. Afterall, in a school year of 180 days, less than 10% would be 17 days. We are asking all Mannion students to do their part and to not exceed 17 absences for the 24-25 school year. Take a moment to review your student’s absences on the parent portal of the student information system. Is your student chronically absent after 45 days of school?
We, along with the State of Nevada, realize that students need to be absent for numerous reasons. Family trips, baseball tournaments, dentist appointments, and upset stomachs are part of everyday life. These things are important to our students, and we respect that. However, these types of events, when not tracked, can quickly add up and exceed 17 days.
We carefully monitor student attendance, and our school’s dedicated attendance clerk, grade level counselors, and grade level assistant principals also carefully monitor student attendance. Our chronic absenteeism is shared monthly on our school website, and identified students with excessive absences are contacted. However, we feel a responsibility to share with our community the urgent need to once again decrease our chronic absenteeism for the 2024-2025 school year.
Please let me know if you have any questions about student attendance.
Go Mustangs!
